The main objective of this project is to design and implement a bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charger that integrates shunt active power filtering (SAPF) functionality using a Bi-Directional Sliding Mode Control (BD-SMC) technique. This system aims to improve grid power quality by mitigating harmonics, ensuring seamless bidirectional power flow during G2V and V2G operations, and maintaining stable DC link voltage under varying grid conditions.
This paper proposes a MATLAB/Simulink-based electric vehicle (EV) charging system integrated with shunt active power filter (SAPF) functionality for improved grid power quality. The proposed Bi-Directional Sliding Mode Control (BD-SMC) technique is implemented in Simulink to achieve harmonic mitigation, stable DC link voltage, and smooth bidirectional power flow during grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operations. The system effectively combines EV charging and active power filtering within a single control framework, reducing total harmonic distortion and enhancing voltage regulation. Simulation results demonstrate the system’s ability to maintain sinusoidal grid currents and stable DC-link voltage under various operating conditions, including load variation and distorted grid supply, validating the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for real-time EV charging and grid support applications.
