Objective

The primary objective of this paper is to enhance the power quality of a wind energy system based on a self-excited induction generator (SEIG) by using a DSTATCOM controlled with an enhanced phase-locked loop (E²PLL) algorithm. The proposed control method ensures accurate reactive power compensation, voltage regulation, and harmonic suppression in the presence of nonlinear and unbalanced loads.

Abstract

This paper presents an improved E²PLL-based control algorithm for a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to enhance the power quality of a wind energy system based on a self-excited induction generator (SEIG). SEIGs, widely used in small-scale wind applications, face significant voltage instability and harmonic distortions due to their dependence on reactive power. DSTATCOM, a shunt-connected compensator, plays a critical role in providing reactive power support and current balancing under varying load conditions. Existing control methods for DSTATCOM rely on conventional phase-locked loops (PLLs), which have limited harmonic filtering capabilities and are sensitive to frequency variations. In this study, an enhanced E²PLL-based control strategy is proposed, which ensures accurate load current estimation, fast disturbance rejection, and superior filtering performance. The proposed algorithm is tested under nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions, and simulation results demonstrate that E²PLL significantly reduces voltage fluctuations, improves load balancing, and enhances overall system stability. This method provides an efficient solution for improving the power quality of wind energy systems, ensuring stable and reliable operation.
