Performance Analysis of OFDM and OFDMMIMO Systems under Fading Channels

Objective

To evaluate and compare the BER performance of OFDM and OFDM–MIMO systems using convolutional coding under AWGN, Rayleigh, and Rician channels to assess reliability improvements in wireless communication systems.

Abstract

Fourth-generation (4G) wireless communication systems are primarily based on Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technologies. The integration of these techniques results in an OFDM–MIMO system that offers higher capacity and increased data rates compared to conventional approaches. This paper investigates the bit error rate (BER) performance of both OFDM and OFDM–MIMO systems using convolutional coding to protect the transmitted data stream over wireless channels. Simulations are conducted in MATLAB under three different channel models, namely Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), Rayleigh fading, and Rician fading. The simulation results demonstrate that the OFDM–MIMO system achieves superior BER performance compared to the standalone OFDM system.
