The primary objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging on voltage and current harmonics at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC), with a particular focus on Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The study investigates the harmonic spectrum caused by EV charging, emphasizing the influence of harmonics and their effect on grid stability and performance.
This paper examines the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging on Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). As EV adoption grows, power quality issues arise due to harmonics introduced by on-board chargers, affecting grid performance. An analysis of harmonic content in voltage and current waveforms reveals that lower-order harmonics contribute significantly to THD. High charging power levels lead to increased current THD, potentially affecting transformer efficiency. To mitigate these effects, a power conversion topology incorporating Power Factor Correction (PFC) and a DC-DC converter is proposed. This approach reduces harmonic injection, enhancing power quality and grid stability. The findings highlight the importance of harmonic mitigation strategies in EV charging infrastructure.
