Objective

The main objective of the project is to design and manage an energy storage system (ESS) to support electric vehicle (EV) charging in an off-grid setup using solar photovoltaic (PV) generation. The proposed system aims to optimize the interaction between the PV array, energy storage, and EV charging in remote areas with limited or no access to the power grid.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and management of an off-grid energy storage system (ESS) powered by solar photovoltaic (PV) for charging electric vehicles (EV). With the increasing penetration of electric vehicles, the need for sustainable and renewable energy sources for EV charging infrastructure has become more significant. In off-grid applications, the combination of solar PV and energy storage offers a feasible solution. The system comprises a PV array, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and a bidirectional DC-DC converter, which manages the power flow between the PV system, the storage, and the EV. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm optimizes the energy extraction from the PV, while the converter regulates the charging and discharging of the BESS and EV battery. The proposed solution is validated through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink.
