Design Modeling and Control of a Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer for Light-Duty Vehicles: G2V and V2G Systems

Project Code :TEMAED266

Objective

The main objective is to implement a control strategy for a bidirectional wireless power transfer system that enables efficient energy transfer in both G2V and V2G modes for light-duty electric vehicles, ensuring system reliability under varying operational conditions.

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel design methodology and control strategy for a bidirectional 3.7 kW wireless power transfer (WPT) system tailored for light-duty electric vehicle (EV) powertrains. The proposed system operates at two distinct switching frequencies: 85 kHz and 140 kHz. A Series/Series (SS) compensation topology is optimally designed and implemented in both grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging modes using MATLAB/Simulink. The control system is developed to enhance efficiency, charging power, and reduce charging time while supporting bidirectional energy flow. Simulation studies are carried out to evaluate the performance and functionality of the WPT system under different switching frequencies for both G2V and V2G operations. Furthermore, the impact of the WPT system on grid power quality is analyzed for each operating mode.
