Objective

The main objective of this project to design and control of a two stage battery charger for low voltage electric vehicles using high gain buck boost PFC AC DC converter for efficient charging.

Abstract

This paper presents the design and control of a two-stage battery charger for low-voltage electric vehicles (LVEVs). The proposed charger employs a bridgeless high-gain buck-boost AC–DC converter at the front end to achieve high power factor, continuous input current, and improved power quality at the AC mains. The converter operates in discontinuous current mode (DCM), which simplifies the control strategy and reduces switching losses. At the back end, an isolated Cuk DC–DC converter is used to regulate the battery charging process and implement standard charging modes such as constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV). The high voltage conversion capability and DCM operation enable the charger to operate effectively over a wide range of input voltages and DC-link conditions. This configuration ensures reliable charging for different battery voltage levels used in electric vehicles.
