Abstract

Railway safety is a very complicated subject, which is determined by numerous aspects. This paper proposed an automatic RFID detection based railway identification system (RVI) to give the risk assessment to the rail. In the RVI system, RFID detection is applied. The system consists of a camera and Raspberry Pi and RFID Technology, Raspberry PI.RFID tags were installed on the tunnel wall (or vicinity in case the tunnel wall is not applicable) at each location for redundancy design. An RFID reader is also installed at the front of the railway. When a train comes to the RFID tag, the RFID reader will receive the RFID signal from the passive RFID tags. Then, the Raspberry Pi of RFID reader will activate to take photos of the rail condition. These photos will be further transmitted to the cloud server through the network. With the RVI system, by tackling ad-hoc incidents with speedy inspection and response, once suspected rail crack incident occurs, engineering central engineers can conduct remote condition monitoring of rail integrity. Engineering central engineers can take further actions according to the rail condition which speeds up the inspection process to maintain smooth operation of daily train service RVI system helps to enhance the reliability, accuracy, and efficiency of remote condition monitoring of rail integrity.
