A New Architecture for Network Intrusion Detection and Prevention

Abstract

Monitor incidents on a computer system or network and analyze them for signs of possible incidents, violations of computer security policies, violations of acceptable use practices or standard security practices, or imminent threats. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is software that automates the intrusion detection process. An intrusion prevention system (IPS) is software that has all the capabilities of an intrusion detection system and may attempt to stop possible incidents. IDS and IPS technologies offer similar capabilities, and administrators can generally disable preventive features in IPS products so that they function as IDSs. Accordingly, the term Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) is used throughout the rest of this chapter to refer to IDS and IPS technologies for brevity. Experimental research demonstrates that current network intrusion, detection and prevention systems (NIDPS) have many shortcomings in detecting or preventing unwanted traffic and many threats in a high-speed environment. This shows that NIDPS performance can be impaired in the face of high-speed and high-load malicious traffic when packet drops fail to detect / block the best packets and unwanted traffic without analysis. A novel quality service (QoS) architecture has been designed to detect intrusion and increase preventive performance. Our research proposed and evaluated a solution using a novel QoS configuration on a multi-layer switch to handle packet / traffic and parallel methods to increase packet processing speed.
